How to Set and Use Cookies in PHP
As a website developer, you can use PHP to set cookiesà that contain information about the visitors to your website. Cookies store information about a site visitor on the visitors computer that can be accessed upon a return visit. One common use of cookies is to store an access token so the user doesnt need to log in each time he visits your website. Cookies can also store other information such as the users name, the date of the last visit and shopping-cart contents. Although cookies have been around for years and most people have them enabled, some users either do not accept them because of privacy concerns or automatically delete them when their browsing session closes. Because cookies can be removed by a user at any time and are stored in a plain-text format, dont use them to store anything sensitive. How to Set a Cookie Using PHP In PHP, the setcookie() function defines a cookie. Its sent along with the other HTTP headers and transmits before the body of the HTML is parsed. A cookie follows the syntax: setcookie(name,value,expire,path,domain,secure,httponly); where nameââ¬â¹ denotes the name of the cookie and ââ¬â¹valueââ¬â¹ describes the cookies contents. ââ¬â¹For the setcookie() function, only theà nameââ¬â¹ parameter is required. All other parameters are optional.à Example Cookie ââ¬â¹To set aà cookie named UserVisit in the visitors browser that sets the value to the current date, and further sets the expiration to beà in 30 days (2592000 60 seconds * 60 mins * 24 hours * 30 days), use the following PHP code: ?php $Month 2592000 time();//this adds 30 days to the current timesetcookie(UserVisit, date(F jS - g:i a), $Month);? Cookies must be sent before any HTML is sent to the page or they do not work, so the setcookie() function must appear before the html tag. How to Retrieve a Cookie using PHP To retrieve a cookie from the users computer upon the next visit, call it with the following code: ?phpif(isset($_COOKIE[UserVisit])){$last $_COOKIE[UserVisit];echo Welcome back! br You last visited on . $last;}else{echo Welcome to our site!;}? This code first checks if the cookie exists. If it does, it welcomes the user back and announces when the user last visited. If the user is new, it prints a generic welcome message. TIP: If you are calling a cookie on the same page you plan to set one, retrieve it before you overwrite it. How to Destroy a Cookie To destroy a cookie, use setcookie() again but set the expiration date to be in the past: ?php $past time() - 10; //this makes the time 10 seconds ago setcookie(UserVisit, date(F jS - g:i a), $past);? ââ¬â¹Optional Parameters In addition to valueà andà expire, the setcookie() function supports several other optional parameters: Pathââ¬â¹ identifies the server path of the cookie. If you set it to / then the cookie will be available to the entire domain. By default, the cookie works in the directory its set in, but you can force it to work in other directories by specifying them with this parameter. This function cascades, so all subdirectories within a specified directory will also have access to the cookie.Domainââ¬â¹Ã ââ¬â¹identifies the specific domain that the cookie works in. To make the cookie work on all subdomains, specify the top-level domain explicitly (e.g., sample.com). If you set the domain to www.sample.com then the cookie is only available in the www subdomain.Secureââ¬â¹ specifies whether the cookie should transmit over a secure connection. If this value is set to TRUE then the cookie will set only for HTTPS connections. The default value is FALSE.Httponlyââ¬â¹, when set to TRUE, will only allow the cookie to be accessed by the HTTP protocol. By default, the value is FALSE. T he benefit of setting the cookie to TRUE is that scripting languages cannot access the cookie.

American Diet Free Essays
America today is in the middle of a nutritional crisis. Throughout the country, the obesity epidemic has struck every population demographic. According to recent projections made by the United States Government, 63. What exactly is the culprit behind this crisis? How can someone fix this issue? The answers lie in the average American Diet. The diet consumed by Americans is one of, if not the worst diet in terms of saturated fat, trans fats, lack of carbohydrates, over consumption of protein, and overall malnutrition. Recommended Dietary Allowances adopted by nutritionists around the globe and countries such as the United States, Canada, and Australia tell us that the American diet fails to come even close to proper nutritional consumption. However, the problem with the American diet is actually easily fixable if people start making smart, informed choices about their food. By properly educating the general public about nutrition and health, the obesity epidemic can be controlled and cured, leaving America with happier, healthier citizens. In order to understand why obesity is so prevalent in America today, the average diet of American citizens must be taken into account. According to data provided by The United States Department of Agriculture, Americans today consume too much red meat and sugar and too little vegetables and carbohydrates (grains). Because we consume so much red meat, which is high in saturated fat, calories and cholesterol, our diets are inherently riddled with fat and calories. Our sugar consumption also is a glaring issue. By consuming far more simple carbohydrates than we need from sugar, Americans are providing themselves with empty calories that spike blood glucose. This is compounded with the fact that the average American diet lacks proper consumption of complex carbohydrates, which come from whole grains and wheat products. That is a lot of information to digest (no pun intended), but what does it all mean. Well, according to the panel of nutrition specialists who set the Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDA) for the U. S. nd Canada, the over consumption of red meat and sweets along with the under consumption of complex carbohydrates and fruits and vegetables has cause an increase in numerous diseases for the average American. These diseases include: Coronary Heat Disease, Diabetes, Obesity, Heart Attack, Stroke, and numerous forms of cancer, among other things. The most obvious of these in the American public is obesity and diabetes. However, increases in the previously mentioned diseases have been connected with Americanââ¬â¢s poor dietary habits as well. So how does one correct their eating habits? Instead of consuming red meats and foods rich in sugar and simple carbohydrates, Americans should make alternative choices that will provide them with adequate nutrition and energy. For example, instead of having a burger for dinner, which judging by the average American diet is probably loaded with red meat, cheese, and other products high in saturated fat and cholesterol, a person should go instead with chicken breast or fish as their meat source for dinner. Chicken breast provides just as much protein, if not more than red meat, contains little to no saturated fat, and is a good source of other essential vitamins and minerals. Fish shares all the good qualities of chicken breast and contains many essential oils such as Omega-3 and Omega-6, which have been shown to reduce cholesterol and lower body fat content. Instead of choosing soda to go along with a meal, people should choose water or non-fat milk instead. And for goodness sake, people need to put their sandwiches on wheat bread. White bread has lower levels of protein, iron, fiber, and complex carbohydrates and has higher levels of sugar and simple carbohydrates than wheat bread. Another issue is our consumption of vegetables and fruits. The average American should obtain around 3 cups of vegetables and 2 cups of fruits every day. Most Americans donââ¬â¢t bother to take in half of this recommended amount, which is clearly an issue. Again, the solution to this is fairly simple and easily obtainable. Instead of having fries with a meal, a salad or a side of broccoli and carrots is a simple alternative. For dessert, cake can be replaced with a banana or an apple. These small differences in the diet really do make a large difference in the long run. Vegetables provide us vitamins, antioxidants, enzymes, minerals, and fiber. While fruits also provide the body with minerals, vitamins and antioxidants, they also provide the body fructose, which is later converted to glucose for energy. Changing the average American diet is not as difficult as it sounds. Providing the public with proper information about food and what is actually in it, along with making healthy food choices readily available to the average citizen will go a long way to curbing and preventing the obesity epidemic. Storm on the Island and Patrolling Barnegat Essay The poem Storm on the Island is written in the first persons point of view and describes what is happening as a personal incident and allows you to connect with the characters in the poem, and show that Heaney may have had personal experience with a storm on an island.. However in Patrolling Barnegat the poet has used the third persons point of view but the poet uses empathy to tell the story of the storm, using empathy for the people and describes what the storm is doing to the island. There is a dramatic opening to the beginning of Patrolling Barnegat that has powerful words such as the roar of the gale that lead to powerful images that relate to the ferocity of the storm and the lashing of the waves in the see when the poet says the sea is shouting with demoniac laughter which tells you of the fierce sounds coming from the sea. In the poem Storm on the Island there is also a strong opening, but this tells of the positive actions the people of the island have done to try and protect themselves from the storm. This also tells of how proud they are that they have build our houses squat and that they sink walls in rock and roof them with good slate showing that they have had experience of the storm before. Towards the end of the poem the poet describe the storm to a war to emphasise the ferocity and danger of the storm on the island and shows the sea as an enemy during storms, but a friend when the weather is calm and the weather is pleasant, but turns on them like a wild animal. The ending to the poem is surprising that the island people should fear nothing when there is a ferocious storm, they may say they fear nothing because they have prepared well and there village will not collapse, or they may not fear anything because the islanders know that they can just rebuild anything that breaks as they have each others help to do the tasks that lie ahead. In Patrolling Barnegat the poet has personified the wind making it seem evil as it has evil laughter and the wind had intention of destroying obstacles stood in front of it. The storm that is raging is happening at night. Night is associated with danger and the mystery of not knowing what is there making it spooky and mysterious as the storm is to the reader of the poem, this comes from the storm being associated with the supernatural earlier with demoniac laughter and death-wind. The eeriness and spookiness of the storm makes you feel pity and a need to help the people in trouble because they cannot run away from such a dramatic and dangerous effect of nature. The language used in Patrolling Barnegat gives emphasis as alliteration is used which gives you a point such as on beachy slush and sand spirits of snow fierce slanting which makes you think about the storms condition and the use of imagery shows the storm to be like a winters day due to the sand spirits of snow, but this is an opposite to what the poem is telling you about the storm. Throughout the poem onomatopoeia is used which lets us hear how harsh the storm is and the diabolical truth that is happening during the storm such as demoniac laughter and beachy slush. This tells me how lonely it must be for the people who live on the island if they are on their own, and how scary it must be fro them as they have no one to turn to for help and no one can help or protect them. In Storm on the Island the poet is connected to nature and seems to know what it would be like to be there in the storm as he has lived the experience. The poet knows that the storm would not be the same if it was to happen in a big city as they have strongly constructed buildings and if one was to fall down they could rebuild it easily but out on the island they would have to gather resources and they cannot easily construct a building, or do it as quickly as in a city as they do not have machines to work for them. However on the island people are connected to the land and would rebuild their homes without damaging the land unlike the city dwellers who destroy habitats. The people in the poem work together as a community as the poet talks as we not I which shows they work as one unit not separate people. The poet in Patrolling Barnegat also shows connection to nature even though he is writing in the third persons point of view. The onomatopoeia in the poem invites excitement and interest and helps you to imagine what is happening out at sea and how scary it must be for the people involved. There is a tension built as there are links with the supernatural such as demoniac, and spirits which add interest and makes the poem spooky, which is not something that is usually associated with a storm, the usual feelings are to be scared but to think of it as spooky or otherworldly would not have originally been obvious.
